Layl — “Night”

Location: Sudbury, ON
Event: Nuit Blanche
Materials: Bent black walnut, laser-cut Baltic Birch lattice

Description
Layl (“night” in Arabic) was created as an immersive installation for Nuit Blanche Sudbury. The piece explored the union of craft and technology—an exercise in steam-bending black walnut and integrating digitally fabricated Baltic Birch latticework.

The installation became a dialogue between traditional woodworking techniques and contemporary digital processes, where hand-shaped curves met precise, laser-cut geometries. The interplay of shadow and light across the lattice invited visitors to pause, reflect, and inhabit the work as a spatial experience.

More than an object, Layl was a study in material transformation and cultural resonance—bridging heritage craft with modern tools, and evoking the quiet depth of night.
